Deutsch Pinot Noir Glas

What makes German Pinot Noir special?

Spätburgunder is the German name for Pinot Noir — and Germany is the second-largest growing region for this demanding grape variety worldwide, after France. Today, Pinot Noirs produced here are attracting international attention — complex, mineral, age-worthy, with an elegance that Burgundy lovers will immediately recognize.

The key lies in diversity: different soils, different climates, different winemakers with different philosophies. No two German Spätburgunders taste alike — and that's precisely what makes the discovery so exciting.

Spätburgunder & Burgundy — closer than you think

Pinot Noir is the soul of Burgundy — but it has long since found a new home in German vineyards. If you love village Burgundy, you'll appreciate German Spätburgunder from the Palatinate or the Rheingau. If you're looking for Premier Cru, check out our Große Lagen (Grand Crus). And if you want to discover something truly unexpected — Spätburgunder from Saxony or Saale-Unstrut will surprise you.

The Regions — eight characters

The Palatinate produces powerful, expressive Spätburgunders with ripe fruit. The Rheingau stands for elegance and finesse — classic, age-worthy. Rheinhessen surprises with modern, approachable styles. Württemberg brings distinctive, spicy Spätburgunders from a long red wine tradition. And Saxony and Saale-Unstrut produce Pinot Noirs with a precision and minerality that you truly won't find just anywhere.

Aging & Style — what's in the glass?

Stückfass: Large, old wooden barrels preserve freshness and fruit — an elegant, Burgundian style without dominant oak notes.

Barrique: Small oak barrels provide more structure and depth. When done well, it doesn't create an oak bomb — but a powerful, age-worthy wine with true character.

You'll find both styles with us — the wine description will tell you exactly how each wine was aged.

Direct from the winemaker — and perhaps your next big thing

All Spätburgunders at Wein & Nielsen are personally collected by us from the producers and stored at our facility — no intermediaries, no long storage chains. Ex-winery prices, optimal storage until delivery — and wines that bring joy.

If you've loved Pinot Noir from Burgundy until now: German Spätburgunder could be your next big thing.
