What makes German Chardonnay special?
Chardonnay is one of the most adaptable grape varieties in the world - and that's exactly what makes it so exciting in Germany. Where the vines grow, how the winemaker works, whether steel or oak is used - all of that fundamentally shapes the character of the wine. German Chardonnay is not a copy of Burgundy. It has its own voice - precise, saline, and with a freshness that makes it unmistakable.
Where does German Chardonnay grow?
Chardonnay thrives in Germany especially in the warmer regions - Pfalz, Baden, Württemberg and Rheinhessen. Here the variety benefits from long hours of sunshine, well-drained soils and winemakers who know how to get the most out of it. These are exactly the regions our Chardonnays come from - for example from Weingut Andres and Weingut J. J. Berizzi.
What particularly fascinates us about our selection: Chardonnay from Saxony and Saale-Unstrut - cooler regions that give the wine a completely different tension and minerality. Wines you really won't find everywhere. For example from VDP.Weingut Martin Schwarz and VDP.Weingut Böhme & Töch.
The styles - from lean to lush
German Chardonnay is not a uniform style. The range goes from bone dry and mineral to creamy and complex - depending on region, vineyard and ageing.
Lean & precise: Cool-fermented Chardonnays with vibrant acidity, clean fruit and a long mineral finish. Ideal for those who love Burgundian style without heaviness.
Powerful & complex: Fully ripe grapes from warm sites, often with more body and depth. This is where German Grosse Lagen show what they are capable of.
Steel or barrique - what's in the glass?
Ageing is decisive for a Chardonnay's character. With us you'll find both styles — and sometimes a combination of both.
Steel: Preserves the freshness, fruit and minerality of the wine. No wood masking the origin - just the pure expression of grape and terroir.
Barrique: Oak barrels give the wine structure, depth and subtle notes of vanilla, butter or brioche. Done well, the result is not an "oak bomb" - but a complex, age-worthy wine with genuine character.
Our tip: Check the description of each wine - there you'll find exactly how it was aged.
