What is “Winzersekt”?
“Winzersekt” is not just any sparkling wine. It is sparkling wine produced by the winemaker themselves — from grapes from their own vineyard, using traditional methods, with the ambition of an artisan, not a factory. In Germany, a sparkling wine can only be called “Winzersekt” if 100% of the grapes come from the producer's own estate and the second fermentation takes place traditionally in the bottle. This is not a marketing term — it is a legally protected standard.
The result is a sparkling wine with character, origin, and depth — far removed from the industrial sparkling wine you find in the supermarket.
Traditional Bottle Fermentation — Patience as the Secret Ingredient
In traditional bottle fermentation, the second fermentation takes place directly in the bottle — just like with Champagne. The base wine is mixed with yeast and sugar, the bottle is sealed, and then the waiting begins. For months, sometimes years, the sparkling wine rests on its lees, developing its characteristic depth, fine creamy perlage, and the complex aromas you'll search for in vain in industrial sparkling wine.
Afterwards, the yeast is collected in the neck of the bottle by riddling and disgorged — removed — before the sparkling wine is sealed and released to the market. Each bottle is the result of patience, craftsmanship, and a vineyard that brings its own character.
All Winzersekt at Wein & Nielsen are produced using this method. No tanks, no compromise.
The Styles — from Brut Nature to Rosé
Winzersekt is not a uniform style — the range is as vast as the German wine regions themselves.
Brut Nature & Extra Brut: The purest styles — with no or minimal dosage. Bone dry, precise, mineral. For those who love Blanc de Blancs style Champagne.
Blanc de Blancs: From white grapes, usually Chardonnay or Pinot Blanc. Elegant, fresh, with delicate fruit and long perlage.
Blanc de Noirs: From red grapes — Pinot Noir or Pinot Meunier — but produced as a white sparkling wine. More body, more structure, often with a delicate red fruit in the background.
Rosé: One of the most exciting styles in German Winzersekt. From delicate salmon to deep copper — with strawberry, cherry, and an animating freshness.
Riesling-Sekt: A German specialty without parallel. The acidity of Riesling meets the creaminess of bottle fermentation — the result is unique and unmistakably German.
Winzersekt & Champagne — Closer Than You Think
Champagne and Winzersekt share the same method, the same philosophy, and often the same care. The difference lies in the origin — and sometimes the price.
If you love Champagne but are curious about what German vineyards can achieve: Winzersekt is your answer. Not a substitute — a true alternative with its own character and history.
Many of our customers who tried a good Winzersekt for the first time look at the Champagne list differently afterwards.
