This Spätlese from VDP.Weingut Peter Lauer comes from the famous Ayler Kupp, the iconic Grand Cru site of the Saar with its classic blue Devonian slate. While the Kabinett reflects the character of ripe grapes, the Spätlese is created through a careful selection of overripe, golden-yellow berries, harvested just before they begin to dry out. It is at precisely this moment that the grapes develop the characteristic exotic aroma that has made the great Saar Spätlese a classic for over a hundred years.

In the glass, it shows a bright, luminous golden hue. On the nose, a full, complex, and distinctly exotic aroma unfolds: passionfruit and ripe orange define the bouquet, complemented by yellow peach, honeydew melon, and a fine, cool slate spice. On the palate, the wine is full-fruited and unusually complex, supported by a clear, lively Saar acidity that playfully balances the opulent sweetness. The finish is long, elegant, and wonderfully invigorating.

The wine is made in the classic Saar style: hand-picked, overripe grapes, whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts from the vineyard, followed by quiet maturation on fine lees. Like all great Saar Spätlesen, the No 7 also has considerable aging potential – with a few years of bottle age, the wine opens up further, gaining in depth, spice, and honey-like complexity, without losing its typical Saar freshness.

A fruit-sweet, elegant Saar classic with exotic depth and striking aging potential. We recommend serving it at eight to ten degrees in a Riesling glass; already an expressive delight when young, it fully develops its beauty with a few years of bottle aging. Classic Saar Spätlesen are considered particularly age-worthy and often continue to mature for decades.
