Peter Lauer Riesling No 17 Neuenberg

This Neuenberg from VDP.Weingut Peter Lauer is a Riesling from one of the oldest documented vineyards in the entire wine world: already on the "1835 Tax Map" - the oldest vineyard map in the world - the Ayler "Neuberg" is specifically described. Today, the Neuenberg is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE and is located at the foot of the Ayler Kupp, with a full south-southwest exposure. In this position, the vines get more soil depth and warmth than at the top of the steep slope, which gives the wine fullness and complexity without losing the typical Saar freshness. The site is characterized by classic blue Devonian slate, which brings salty minerality and a calm, vibrant tension to the wine.

In the glass, it shows a bright, luminous straw yellow. On the nose, a full-bodied, complex bouquet unfolds: ripe yellow peach fruit, yellow apple, a hint of apricot, along with slate spice, dried herbs, and a delicate, cool smoky note. On the palate, the wine is dense, smooth, and unusually complex, supported by a fine, lively acidity and a pronounced, salty minerality. The finish is very long, full-bodied, and with that mineral weight that only the historic Saar sites can provide.

The wine is made in the classic Saar style: hand-picked grapes, whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts from the vineyard, followed by quiet aging on fine lees. On the label, the wine bears the designation "trocken schmeckend" (tasting dry) - a conscious stylistic decision by the Lauer winery. A minimal, finely integrated residual sweetness balances the powerful Saar acidity and gives the wine additional depth and drinkability without making it taste sweet. On the palate, it tastes dry; on the data sheet, not quite.

A Saar Riesling with history, depth, and character. A white wine that you can also give a few years of bottle aging - with time it gains in spice, honey, and depth.
