The Chardonnay grows in the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® Freyburger Edelacker on the Saale river in the Saale-Unstrut region. This renowned Grosse Lage is characterized by a cool-dry continental climate and steep south and southeast-facing slopes. The soils consist of deeply weathered shell limestone on heat-retaining bedrock, which imparts a salty minerality, freshness, and a fine, delicate structure to the wines. The exposed top site allows for slow, even ripening with a decidedly Mediterranean character in the aroma profile.
On the nose, the Chardonnay reveals a complex aromatic profile: ripe fruit notes of mirabelle plum, honeydew melon, and gooseberries, complemented by an exciting yeast reduction, fine nutty notes, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is powerful and juicy, with a silky texture, lively acidity, and clear mineral tension. The well-integrated wood and grippy phenolic structure lend depth and length, while the aromatics remain elegant yet concentrated.
The grapes are selectively hand-picked and spontaneously fermented, partly in Tonneau barrels, which adds additional complexity to the wine. After fermentation, the wine matures for an extended period on its fine lees (about nine months), followed by bottle aging that further promotes its depth and tension. This aging process preserves both freshness and structure and allows the Chardonnay to clearly reflect the origin of the Grosse Lage site.
An elegant, terroir-driven Grosses Gewächs Chardonnay that combines mineral precision, juicy fruit, and fine spice. Powerful, structured, and with remarkable length – an expression of the cool, lime-rich terroir of Saale-Unstrut and at the same time a versatile food companion.
