Top Wine in the North

Weingut Böhme & Töchter is one of the most exciting estates in Saale-Unstrut. What happens here begins in the vineyard — meticulously, with great attention to every parcel — and continues in the cellar, where the wines are given the time they need. No haste, no noise. Instead: precision, patience, and a style that in recent years has gained attention across Germany.

Saale-Unstrut — A Region Rediscovered

Saale-Unstrut is one of Germany's smallest and northernmost wine regions — and perhaps its most underestimated. Cool continental climate, short growing season, steep south-facing slopes along the Saale and Unstrut rivers, and above all: deep limestone soils that bring minerality and tension to every wine. In the VDP.GROSSE LAGE Freyburger Edelacker even wild Mediterranean herbs grow — wild thyme and stone cherries between the vines — adding fine herbal notes to the typical limestone minerality.

Add to that the VDP.ERSTEN LAGEN Freyburger Mühlberg and Zscheiplitzer Himmelreich, plus the terraced sites on Freyburger Schweigenberg — one of the few places in Saale-Unstrut where Chardonnay has been successfully cultivated since 2008.

Daughters Who Made It Their Own

Today Marika leads the family estate together with her husband Sandro and her sister Toska. Trained at Geisenheim, she gained experience in Oregon — and brought back from there the passion for Chardonnay that she planted, as one of the first in the region, on the steep terraces of Freyburg. Today Chardonnay is regarded as a new noble grape of Saale-Unstrut.

Their admission to the VDP in the summer of 2022 was the confirmation of what connoisseurs had long seen: here, German top wine is being made.

In the Cellar — Time as an Ingredient

The wines mature long on the fine lees, increasingly with spontaneous fermentation, and the top cuvées are partly aged in oak — especially Weißburgunder and Chardonnay. No synthetic fertilizers, no systemic sprays, careful respect for nature. What lands in the glass has its own rhythm: precise, mineral, with a clarity that only cooler climates can give.

The result are wines you don't drink in passing. They want time, and they give time back — as a memory that stays.

What We Particularly Value

From the Freyburger Edelacker — the estate's most important vineyard — we carry the complete range of Großen Gewächse: Riesling, Weißburgunder, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder. Four wines from a single vineyard, four very different characters. Add to that the Erste Gewächse from the Zscheiplitzer Himmelreich, the approachable Ortsweine, and two traditionally bottle-fermented Sekte. A selection through which you can truly come to know Saale-Unstrut.

A Personal Connection

Whoever visits Marika, Sandro, Toska and the family team in Gleina senses immediately what makes this estate distinctive: genuine hospitality, attention to every detail, and the quiet self-evidence with which German top wine is made here — far from the better-known regions, with its own voice.

Our Selection — Direct from the Estate

At Wein & Nielsen you'll find several vintages from Böhme & Töchter direct from the estate. Hand-selected, ex winery prices.
