When you meet Mark Barth, you sense it immediately: here speaks someone who knows his craft in every fibre. For over 75 years the Barth name has stood for quality in Hattenheim. Today Christine and Mark lead the estate - VDP member since 1999, fully bio-certified since 2013. And for over 30 years pioneers of an idea that has become one of the most exciting developments in German wine: classified Lagensekt.
Across 23 hectares Barth farms some of the Rheingau's most famous vineyards: the VDP.GROSSE LAGEN Hassel, Wisselbrunnen and Hendelberg, the VDP.ERSTE LAGEN Schützenhaus, Schönhell, Jungfer and Lenchen. Vineyards everyone knows. Vineyards where you also find Riesling at the highest level - and where Barth has developed an unmistakable signature.
Sekt - Architects of the German Classification
Mark Barth is regarded as one of the key figures behind the VDP.SEKT.STATUT - the classification that gives German Sekt the same vineyard-based logic as still wines for the first time. The Schützenhaus Brut Nature 2014 was the very first classified VDP.SEKT ever. Today Barth is one of the few German houses internationally recognised on equal footing with the great Champagnes.
What makes these Sekte special is uncompromising craft: 100% bottle fermentation, traditional method, whole-cluster pressing, base wine aged in large oak for the top cuvées, lees ageing of up to 60 months, and — this is the signature — every single bottle hand-riddled. Up to 55 times each bottle is moved by hand before disgorgement. The white stripe on the bottle base is the mark.
Still Wines — Elegance from the School of Sekt
Ask Mark Barth about his still wines, and you'll hear an interesting thought: decades of working with Sekt base wine — high-acid, precise, finely tuned — have shaped his signature on the still wines too. The result is Rieslings of rare delicacy: not loud, not muscular, but clear, finely drawn, with the tension of a Sekt base wine and the ageing potential of great Rheingau vineyards.
In the glass this shows as restrained, almost filigree fruit, precise acid structure, and an aromatic depth that only fully unfolds over time. These wines are not made for quick enjoyment. They are made to develop.
