Burgundian varieties with a voice of their own

Stefan Meyer has changed a great deal in recent years. In 2021, the estate completed its organic certification. In 2023 came the first biodynamic vintage according to Demeter principles. In between, the vineyard area was almost doubled - from 16 to 29 hectares through acquisitions in Siebeldingen. A conversion in the middle of an expansion: a path that only very few winegrowers in Germany take at the same time. What carries this path is a clear conviction — that living soils are the only long-term answer to climate change.

At the centre of his work are the Burgundian varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with Pinot Blanc. And, as a special Pfalz rarity, a Syrah that shows what this region can achieve beyond its familiar varieties.

Rhodt unter Rietburg - Pfalz with patience

Rhodt unter Rietburg lies at the foot of the Pfälzer Wald, on the Southern Wine Route. It is an area with a long winegrowing tradition and diverse soils — loess, loam, shell limestone, coloured sandstone and heavy clay. Stefan Meyer’s vineyards are spread across three sites: Rhodter Rosengarten, with its limestone-rich sections; the warmer Klosterpfad, with sandy-loamy subsoil; and Edenkobener Schwarzer Letten, whose heavy clay soils give Pinot Noir particular depth.

The Pfalz is warm and sun-drenched, but Meyer’s sites are positioned so that the proximity to the Pfälzer Wald brings cool nights - and with them the freshness that gives his wines their tension.

In the cellar - little intervention, plenty of time

In the cellar, the wines are made with spontaneous fermentation, long ageing on the lees, without filtration and without fining. They are matured in stainless steel, used wood and small oak barrels for the top wines. What ends up in the glass is a direct translation of soil, vines and vintage.

The result is wines that are fruit-driven, but not broad. Clearly defined, with the warmth of the Pfalz and a depth that is by no means a given in the region.

What we especially appreciate

At Wein & Nielsen, we carry the estate’s core range. The Pinot Blanc “Aus Rhodt” as an introduction to the estate wines. The two single-vineyard wines from Rhodter Rosengarten - Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay - as Burgundian wines with substance and cool minerality. The Pinot Noir Edenkobener Schwarzer Letten as the top red wine, showing the full depth of the heavy loam soils. And the Syrah Rhodter Klosterpfad, a Pfalz rarity, dark and spicy. A selection through which you can truly get to know Stefan Meyer’s interpretation of the Southern Pfalz.

A personal connection

Anyone who visits Stefan Meyer in Rhodt immediately senses what defines this estate: the clarity with which an independent path has been pursued here for years, the courage to work with atypical varieties, and the calm matter-of-factness with which organic farming and Demeter are lived not as marketing, but as a fundamental agricultural conviction. Pfalz with a voice of its own.
