This Kabinett from VDP.Weingut Peter Lauer comes from the famous Ayler Kupp, the iconic VDP.Grosse Lage of the Saar with its classic blue Devonian slate. The Kabinett is the classic, light, finely fruity expression of Saar Riesling: with a low alcohol content of seven to eight percent, as it is hardly produced in Germany anymore. The tradition of these finely elegant Kabinett wines dates back over a century in the Saar region, and Lauer continues it with unwavering consistency.

In the glass, it presents itself in a bright, luminous straw yellow. On the nose, a wonderfully open, multi-layered bouquet unfolds: ripe yellow berries, white peach, a hint of citrus, along with fresh garden herbs and a fine, cool slate spice. On the palate, the wine appears vibrant, juicy, and unusually light, carried by a precise, clear Saar minerality and a lively acidity that playfully balances the opulent fruit. The finish is long, dance-like, and incredibly stimulating.

An important point for anyone unfamiliar with the Kabinett style: the wine is not made from overripe grapes like a Spätlese, but through careful selection of ripe, but one hundred percent healthy grapes at the optimal harvest time. This precise, early harvest and the natural fermentation brake result in the low alcohol content and the extraordinary freshness for which classic Saar Kabinetts are world-famous. In the classic Saar development, hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, spontaneously fermented, quietly matured on fine lees, the wine retains all its clarity and drinking pleasure.

An extremely invigorating, elegant Saar Riesling with great freshness, fine fruit and mineral clarity. We recommend serving it at eight to ten degrees in a Riesling glass. Classic Saar Kabinetts are considered particularly age-worthy and often continue to ripen for decades – already a pleasure when young, with a few years of bottle aging, the wine gains additional complexity and depth.
