No 13 FEILS Riesling GG - VDP.Weingut Peter Lauer

This "Grosses Gewächs" from the VDP.Weingut Peter Lauer grows in one of the most unusual sites in the entire Saar region: the Feils, a peninsula at the river's fork, amidst the steep slopes around Ayl. The soil consists of old alluvial sand and gravel - the ancient riverbed of the once mighty Saar - and its structure is more akin to Médoc than the classic blue Saar slate of the neighboring sites. The old vines root vertically and deeply, almost reaching the groundwater, without encountering solid rock. This particularly warm, gravelly slope produces a Riesling that, while remaining typically Saar-like in its tension, also displays spice, warmth, and exotic depth in a way that succeeds in only a few places in the world.
In the glass, it presents a bright, luminous straw yellow. On the nose, an opulent, multifaceted bouquet unfolds: fresh herbs, mint, and a hint of eucalyptus, alongside ripe exotic fruits - mango, yellow passion fruit, peach - and a subtle, dark background of spice and minerality. On the palate, the wine is dense, precise, and unusually juicy, supported by a fine-grained minerality and a cool, lively acidity. The finish is long, spicy, and invigorating.
The grapes are exclusively hand-picked and gently whole-bunch pressed. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts from the vineyard, and the wine then matures slowly and unfiltered on its fine lees - a classic Saar craft that prioritizes maximum clarity and fidelity to the site. Vinified in a dry style, the Feils GG retains its striking individuality: a Saar Riesling that uncompromisingly embodies its unusual soil and old vines.
A VDP.Grosses Gewächs of exceptional quality. We recommend serving it at 10–13 °C; give it time in the glass, as a few years of bottle aging will reveal its full complexity.
