Kapitelberg Meissen Riesling GG - VDP.Weingut Martin Schwarz

A powerful yet highly precise Riesling from one of the most significant steep vineyards on the Saxon Elbe. The Kapitelberg is characterized by extreme slopes and weathered granite, in which the vines, some over 40 years old, root deeply. This barren, mineral-rich terroir gives the wine its clear, stony character and great inner tension.

On the nose, the Riesling presents itself as serious, focused, and profound. Yellow citrus fruit, ripe apple, and dried herbs combine with fine smokiness and a cool, mineral impression. The aroma is dense but calm – without excess, with a clear line.

On the palate, the wine is powerful, concentrated, yet precisely guided. A vibrant, well-integrated acidity carries the structure, while the granite-influenced minerality provides length, grip, and clarity. The texture is firm yet supple, the finish long, cool, and mineral-focused.

The Kapitelberg is one of Saxony's outstanding Riesling sites. The granitic weathered soils are poor in nutrients and promote low yields and highly concentrated grapes. The steep relief and proximity to the Elbe ensure optimal ripening conditions while preserving freshness and acidity.

The grapes were processed with a 48-hour maceration period to gain additional structure and phenolics. The wine then matured for about ten months in two 300-liter wooden barrels before resting for another seven months on the fine lees in stainless steel tanks. This combination of maceration, wood aging, and lees aging gives the wine depth, texture, and great inner calm.
