KALMIT Riesling GG - VDP.Weingut Kranz - Organic

The Ilbesheim KALMIT is the south-facing heart of the Kleiner Kalmit, a limestone hill about 270 meters high on the edge of the Palatinate Forest. Geologically exceptionally shaped by porous land snail limestone, overlain by loess, marl, and colluvial loam. The KALMIT is one of the most important limestone sites in the Southern Palatinate.

The continuous sun exposure of the south-facing slope ensures high physiological ripeness, while the lime-rich subsoil preserves freshness, salinity, and mineral precision. Since 2008, the KALMIT has been classified as an independent Große Lage (Grand Cru) – a historically and qualitatively outstanding terroir.

On the nose, the Riesling presents as cool and stony, with ripe citrus fruit, fine reduction, and clear chalky character. On the palate, it appears puristic and focused, with dense extract, a juicy core, and pronounced mineral grip. Salty, spicy nuances lend depth and length, while the balance between power and elegance is maintained at all times.

The grapes were selectively hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, and spontaneously fermented in stainless steel with only slight pre-clarification. The deliberately restrained vinification clearly highlights origin and soil, giving the wine precision, structure, and high aging potential.

A tension-filled, characterful Riesling with great clarity and depth, which impressively brings the chalky signature of the KALMIT into the glass.
