The Senior from VDP.Weingut Peter Lauer is an homage to Peter Lauer I (1906–1991), the grandfather of the current winemaker. The "Senior" had a habit of drinking a bottle of Riesling daily – and each year he personally selected a single barrel from the steep slopes of Ayler Kupp that he felt would please him and his guests. He particularly valued a style that appealed to both lovers of dry wines and those who preferred fruitier wines. Today, a generation later, the Lauer estate continues to produce the Senior in exactly this spirit – as a VDP.Ortswein (village wine), made from several of Lauer's best parcels around Ayl, grown on classic blue Devonian slate.
In the glass, it presents a bright, luminous straw yellow. On the nose, an inviting, vibrant bouquet unfolds: yellow apple, white peach, a hint of apricot, and a delicate slate spice, along with that bright, almost spring-like Saar freshness that is typical of the Lauer estate. On the palate, the wine is juicy, elegant, and balanced, supported by a lively acidity and a subtle, well-integrated residual sweetness that perfectly plays off the Saar acidity. The finish is clear, mineral, and animating.
The "dry to off-dry" style is a deliberate decision – not a compromise, but a language of its own. A minimal, carefully dosed residual sweetness highlights the fruit without making the wine seem sweet; dry on the palate, aromatic and accessible in the bouquet. Produced in the classic Saar style – hand-picked grapes, gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts from the vineyard, followed by quiet aging on fine lees – the wine retains the clarity and elegance for which the Lauer estate stands.
The Senior is exactly what its name promises: a versatile Saar Riesling that suits almost any occasion and almost any meal. A wine not for a grand entrance – but for long-lasting enjoyment.
