The Freyburg Chardonnay VDP.Ortswein trocken comes from the Freyburg locality in the Saale-Unstrut region, primarily from parcels on the Freyburg Schweigenberg, where steep south-facing slopes meet shell limestone-rich soils – a terroir that imparts exceptional minerality and tension to Burgundy varieties. The vineyards benefit from cooler nights, pronounced daytime warmth, and a calcareous subsoil, which gives the Chardonnay a clear, cool style and delicately fruity precision.
On the nose, the Chardonnay presents a complex bouquet: damp limestone notes and slight yeast reduction go hand in hand with aromas of ripe pear, pineapple, gooseberry, as well as nutty and herbaceous nuances. On the palate, it appears dry and powerful, with firm acidity, saline minerality, and a fleshy texture that harmoniously combines fruit, spice, and mineral tension. The animating acid structure gives the wine fresh energy and length on the finish.
The grapes are hand-picked and partly fermented spontaneously in barriques, partly in stainless steel, before the wine is aged on its fine lees. This aging supports a dense, structured texture without masking the freshness and origin. The low residual sugar emphasizes the dry-precise style.
An elegant, mineral-precise Chardonnay from Saale-Unstrut: clearly structured, juicy, and at the same time spicy-complex, a versatile companion to fish, light poultry, or light cuisine.
